What is Metabolic Surgery?

Metabolic surgery is the surgical treatment of metabolic diseases and metabolic syndromes whose diagnostic criteria differ according to races and gender, which are seen as a global epidemic due to its worldwide prevalence. The presence of more than one of the conditions such as thickening of the waist circumference above the risk values, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, increased cholesterol and / or triglyceride levels in the same person indicates the presence of metabolic syndrome and may cause serious consequences such as various heart diseases, stroke and diabetes over time. Thanks to operations performed within the scope of metabolic surgery, almost all metabolic syndromes can be treated. Metabolic surgery has been identified with type 2 diabetes in our country and worldwide, and type 2 version of diabetes can be treated with 90% success rate thanks to surgery. (Surgical treatment of type 1 diabetes patients is not yet possible.)

Everything You Need To Know About Type 2 Diabetes (Metabolic Surgery) Surgery

Metabolic surgery applications differ for each patient. There are more than one factor that determines the price of type 2 diabetes surgery in metabolic surgery methods, which are mainly used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The prices of the surgeries vary according to the following factors:

  • Surgical method determined according to the general condition of the patient to be treated
  • The hospital where the surgery will be performed
  • The expertise and experience of the doctor who will perform the surgery

In this procedure, which is popularly known as diabetes surgery and provides the surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes, more than one method can be applied and basically all have the same principle: keeping the feeling of satiety long by changing the way nutrients are absorbed and increasing insulin release.

The methods used for the treatment of diabetes are also used in obesity surgery (bariatric surgery).
In metabolic surgery applications, body mass index is not always sought in obesity criteria such as bariatric surgery. Even patients with a BMI value of 27 in Asian races and less than 30 in other races, who fail to regress or control the disease despite the diet and exercise programs and medications they use, can undergo type 2 diabetes surgery. Except this;

  • Have sufficient insulin reserves
  • Having a body mass index over 30
  • It has been determined that he does not have type 1 diabetes
  • Has no problem preventing anesthesia

Candidates can undergo surgery with the doctor's approval given after detailed examinations.
Type 2 diabetes surgery is performed under general anesthesia and laparoscopic method. Unlike bariatric surgery methods, the way of absorption of nutrients is changed and the intestines and stomach connection are reshaped with an application called ileal interposition. If the operated patient is not overweight, the part of the stomach containing the hormones that secrete the feeling of hunger is cut and reduced. If an overweight patient is operated at obesity level, ileal interposition is performed after sleeve gastrectomy.
The comments of most of those who have had type 2 diabetes surgery are that the surgery has changed their entire lives positively. Common features observed after the surgery are as follows:

  • The feeling of satiety is reached more quickly
  • Drug use ends
  • Quick weight loss occurs
Type 2 diabetes can be largely treated with metabolic surgery, which has become a separate discipline as a result of the improvement observed in the metabolic syndromes of obese patients after bariatric surgery. In addition, the metabolic syndromes of the person are also eliminated and their life span is extended. Thanks to metabolic surgery, drug addiction ends and their quality of life improves. In addition to all these, lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements are not required as in some bariatric surgery operations, as the absorption path of nutrients is changed during the procedure.
Laparoscopic surgeries have two separate risk levels, short term and long term.

Short term risks:

  • Anesthesia related complications
  • Embolism
  • Bleeding

Long term risks:

  • Leak in the surgery area
  • Stones in the gallbladder
  • Vitamin deficiency due to food absorption restriction
