What is Thyroplasty?

Thyroplasty is a surgical intervention performed to eliminate the incompatibility of the person such as the voice color or tone of the voice being too high (thin) or too low (thick), not suitable for his gender and especially his physical structure.

If the tone of the person's voice should be thin or thick is a problem that negatively affects the quality of life, especially psychologically. Thyroplasty is performed by specialists in the field of vocal cord surgery and allows a more aesthetic and harmonious voice tone to be achieved by thickening or thinning the voice.

Everything You Need To Know About Thyroplasty

Thyroplasty is an operation that has differences in method and operation such as open and closed surgery technique, local and general anesthesia.

The prices of thyroplasty, with an average operation time of 30 minutes to 2 hours, also include differences depending on these technical details.

Many side factors such as the hospital where the surgery will be performed, the location of the hospital, the doctor, the title of doctor also affect the pricing of the aesthetic surgery. Thyroplasty prices vary between 7,000 TL and 12,000 TL on average.
For thyroplasty, the earliest period after puberty can be made by diagnosing "mutational falsetto" in which the voice does not become thick, especially in men. (Thyroplasty cannot be performed before the age of 18)

  •  Women who have a deepening of their voice due to habits such as coffee and smoking,
  •  Women with small voices to create a childlike tone,
  •  Women who have a deep voice that cannot be discriminated against in communication tools,
  •  Men who have a voice that is too thin for gender discrimination in communication tools,
  •  Men whose voice is thinner-higher-pitched than both their gender,
  •  People who want to have an effective voice color for reasons such as career and social status,
  •  Women and men who want to have a tone compatible with the gender with whom the change was made after the sex change surgery,
They are suitable candidates for voice aesthetic surgery.

Thyroplasty is planned and applied for the purposes of "sound thinning" and "sound thickening". Thyroplasty; It is performed with open or oral microsurgery method under general or local anesthesia. The vocal cords are stretched to make the voice thinner, and the taut vocal cords are stretched to make the voice deeper.
In the thyroplasty, an incision is made from the neck of the person to reach the vocal cords.
or surgery can be performed without any oral incision. Which method will be preferred is directly related to the volume of the transaction to be made, the wishes and expectations of the person and the general condition of the person.
1. Thyroplasty for Sound Reduction:
If thyroplasty is to be performed for sound reduction; The operation can be performed under two different anesthesia methods, local and general. The anesthesia chosen varies depending on the size of the procedure. If small changes in voice are aimed, then the operation is performed under local anesthesia, during which the person can hear their own voice. During the vocal aesthetic surgery where the voice will be thinned with small frequency changes, the person is in communication with the doctor and decides the final tone of the voice together. The operation takes 1.5-2 hours on average.
If large frequency changes are aimed in the voice reduction surgery, then the operation is performed under general anesthesia. In high frequency voice reduction surgeries, the vocal cords are stretched as much as they can and it is expected that the vocal cords are relaxed over time (6 months-1 year). At the end of this elapsed time, the sound reaches the targeted frequency value. In high frequency voice reduction surgery, an incision is made from the neck of the person to reach the vocal cords, and the vocal cords are reached and stretching is performed. In the thyroplasty performed with the incision, since the incision scar will be closed with aesthetic stitches, there is no scar and the area will be completely healed after 2-3 months.
2. Sound Aesthetic Surgery for Sound Enhancement:
If the thyroplasty is to be performed for sound enhancement, the operation can be performed under two different anesthesia methods, local and general. The anesthesia chosen varies depending on the size of the procedure. In the voice enhancement surgery, the vocal cords are not stretched but relaxed in order to reach the target tone. The loosening of the vocal cords allows the deep tones to be captured in the sound, just like tuning a stringed instrument.

The person is in communication with the doctor in the voice aesthetic surgery for sound enhancement. It is decided together to capture the tone that the sound should receive during the operation. The application is made by laser entering from the mouth area, there is no incision. It is an operation that takes an average of 1.5-2 hours.

In high frequency sound enhancement surgeries, it is possible to reach the cartilage structure with the incision made from the throat area. In this case, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the person cannot listen to his own voice. By loosening the cartilage area, it is aimed to achieve a full tone of voice. The operation is completed within 30-40 minutes. The incision site is closed with aesthetic stitches. The scar becomes indistinct after 2-3 months.
Whether for thinning or thickening purposes, absolute voice rest should be done in the first week after voice aesthetic surgeries.

In the first days after vocal aesthetic surgeries, the person may not make any sound, this is a temporary period, and the person regains his voice after a day or two.

After vocal aesthetic surgeries, it takes 6-12 months for the sound to settle and take its final form. Since the vocal cords have not been stretched or relaxed at the desired rate before, the sound heard may be thicker or thinner than expected.

After voice aesthetic surgeries, your doctor will inform you about the issues to be considered regarding nutrition. Keeping the vocal cords moist is important for the healing process. Therefore, in the days following the surgery, fluid intake should be increased and acid-containing foods and drinks should be avoided.

There are fluctuations in the tone of the voice for the first six months after the voice enhancement surgery. In the first weeks, the vocal cords become very thick depending on the edema. This is temporary. After the 5th-6th weeks, this excessively thick tone of voice starts to get thinner. The thinning of the voice repeats in 3-4 months.

With the disappearance of edema, that is, after the 6th month, the voice tends to become thick again and at the end of 1 year, the voice regains its final tone. It is a process where the sound is expected to get thinner and deeper in this way.
