What is Septoplasty?
 Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage that separate the space between the two nostrils (septum). The septum is the cartilage that divides the nose into the two nostrils, when this cartilage is crooked, it is defined as a deviated septum (septum deviation). A deviated septum can block one or both chambers of the nose and interfere with airflow, making it difficult to breathe through the nose and increase the risk of sinus infection due to poor drainage.
 Septum deviation (septum deviation) is a problem that can occur as a result of a trauma taken to the nasal area, and can sometimes develop spontaneously. Septoplasty is performed directly to correct septum deviation. Septoplasty surgery is a much shorter and more comfortable operation than other rhinoplasty surgeries, which can be resolved in a short time with a very small incision under anesthesia using an endoscopic method.

Everything You Need to Know About Septorhinoplasty

Septorhinoplasty surgery prices vary according to the scope of the surgery to be performed, the price policy of the selected clinic and hospital, details such as the province-district where the surgery will take place, and the stamp of the doctor who will perform the surgery. Septorhinoplasty surgery prices are individually planned between 5,000 TL and 25,000 TL.
Septum deviation (septum curvature) is a common problem. In severe cases, this curvature prevents the correct air flow in the nostrils and people experience breathing problems. It is important for developing children to wait for the age limit of 18 for septorhinoplasty surgery. Anyone who is over the age of 18, whose general health condition is suitable for anesthesia, and who has breathing difficulties in one or both wings of his nose is a suitable candidate for septorhinoplasty surgery.
With septorhinoplasty surgery; cartilage, bone, or both, straightens the nasal septum by trimming, repositioning, and replacing it.

Septorhinoplasty surgery is a procedure that is mostly performed under general anesthesia and, if desired, with local anesthesia. The surgery is planned as an outpatient treatment, after resting in the postoperative monitoring room, the person can usually go home on the same day.

Septorhinoplasty surgery is performed between 30 minutes and 90 minutes on average. The nasal bone is not broken during the operation, the whole procedure is performed inside the nose. The required procedure steps in the nose are determined by endoscopic examination, a small incision is made and the operation is started. First, the mucosa, the thin membrane that covers and protects the septum, is removed or removed. Then the septum bone and cartilage are reshaped. At this stage, in some cases, bone and cartilage parts are removed, then reshaped and repositioned. Finally, the mucosa is placed back on the septum and the incision is closed with self-melting threads and the surgery is terminated.
 Soft silicone splints can be placed inside each nostril to support the septum. These splints are left in the nose for 1 or 2 weeks depending on the situation. Your surgeon may place a bandage-like material in your nose to prevent post-operative bleeding. Bandage application is removed after 24-36 hours.
Rhinoplasty is an aesthetic surgery performed to correct curvatures and depressions in the external structure of the nose or to straighten the nose, while septorhinoplasty is an intervention performed only on the inner bone of the nose. In other words, septorhinoplasty is a functional surgery for breathing. These two surgeries have separate goals and methods, but it is also possible to perform the two operations together, and it is quite functional.

 As noted specifically in Realself , most doctors prefer to perform these two operations at the same time. They even call this situation septorhinoplasty . In other words, if the person who is not satisfied with the nasal structure has sinus problems or deviation that causes congestion in the nose simultaneously, the surgery performed to solve both the shape and functional problems is called septorhinoplasty .
Before septorhinoplasty surgery, inform your doctor about any details about your general health condition (such as allergy, bleeding problem). In addition, all medications used, including over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbs, should be shared with the doctor as information.

 Before septorhinoplasty surgery, the use of drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and some herbal supplements that make blood coagulation difficult should be discontinued, and the time to start using after surgery should be determined according to the doctor's decision.

 Smoking increases your risk of problems during and after surgery and can slow down the healing process. For this reason, smoking should be stopped before septorhinoplasty surgery and afterwards, it should not be started before the recovery process is completed.

 Before septoplasty surgery, it is useful to consult the doctor about the expectations of the operation and what the results will be. Knowing what septorhinoplasty surgery can and cannot do for you and what your results may be will help to have realistic expectations.
After septorhinoplasty surgery, the person is usually discharged from the hospital after resting in the monitoring room. Your doctor will tell you the ways you need to follow during the resting process at home.
 In this process, to reduce the possibility of bleeding and swelling;

  •  It is important to keep the head area above the body level while sleeping during the first day and the following week. For this, a sleeping position with pillow support should be adopted.
  •  Cleaning the nose by blowing the nose should be avoided for a few weeks after septorhinoplasty surgery.
  •  When dressing and undressing, choose clothes that can be buttoned from the front to prevent damage to the nose. Holding the necks of the clothes, make them wider and fit over your head. Do not pull clothing such as T-shirts or sweaters over your head.
  •  Stay away from heavy activities and sports activities that increase blood pressure for 5 weeks. Strenuous activities such as aerobics and running can cause nosebleeds.

First day after septorhinoplasty surgery;
  •  Have a rest.
  •  Do not rub or even touch the nose.
  •  Although it feels cramped, do not try to clean the nose or blow your nose, you can cause bleeding.
  •  If sneezing is unavoidable, sneeze by mouth.
  •  Compress the nose and eye area with a clean washcloth or an ice pack covered with a towel to reduce pain and swelling.
  •  Do not shower or bathe for the first 24 hours after septoplasty surgery.

After septorhinoplasty surgery, pay attention to these;
 1- Avoid people for a while to prevent the common cold that can lead to infection.
 2- Stay away from dusty or smoky places.
 3- Do not lift heavy for at least 2 weeks.
 4- Stay away from things that create pressure in the head area such as bending, yelling, leaning forward.
Since the nasal bone is not broken during septorhinoplasty surgery, the person does not have to worry about side effects such as bruises spreading under the eyes.

 In the first 7 days after septorhinoplasty surgery, pain or tenderness in the anterior part of the nose, swelling and obstruction may occur due to blood and / or nasal drainage of the mucosa. Pain and sensitivity can be controlled with mild painkillers.

 In order to relieve nasal congestion, your doctor will recommend you sprays containing sea water or moisturizing treatments. Splints will be removed in the nose (if placed) within 1 or 2 weeks. During this time, you will need to breathe through your mouth. It is recommended to wait 1 or 2 weeks before returning to work or school life.

 After septorhinoplasty surgery, the nose is finalized and the healing process is completed within 3 months.
