In the news in Milliyet, Op. Dr. Bahadır Baykal talks about revision rhinoplasty. He says that it is an operation performed to correct problems in noses that have undergone plastic surgery before.
Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Bahadır Baykal said, “Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical intervention that allows correction of aesthetic or functional errors in the previous nose job.
When you look around you can see many people who are happy about the surgery, but you can see people who are unhappy, even people who regret having this surgery.
He said, “We need revision surgery for different reasons” in order to treat the patients in this second group and to eliminate their unhappiness in a sense.
Noting that the aesthetic expectations were not met adequately in the first surgery or functional problems (such as nasal congestion) or the combination of two problems are the main reasons of revision rhinoplasty surgery, Op. Dr. Bahadır Baykal said, “In rhinoplasty operations performed for the first time, revision surgery is needed for two reasons.
Either because the nose structure has been damaged too much or it has not been touched too much.
Another problem is asymmetry. Another unusual situation is highly visible scars.
As in the first rhinoplasty operation, the goal in revision (correction) rhinoplasty is again to improve the shape of the nose and increase its functions.
Sometimes the first surgery result does not meet the expectations of the patient or the surgeon.
In such cases, corrections are made with revision rhinoplasty to eliminate the results of the first surgery.
"These corrections can be interventions that can be performed under 15-20 minutes of local anesthesia, or they can be in complicated interventions that take a long time."
Stating that sometimes there is no functional problem with the nose, functional problems can occur after the first rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Bahadır Baykal said, “In these cases, correction is made to ensure breathing.
Do not forget that nasal aesthetics is the most complex and difficult one among aesthetic facial surgery applications. It requires a thorough surgery.
Incorrect moves, bad changes in the shape of the nose can cause problems in nasal functions.
Nasal curvature, nasal tip asymmetry, pointed and asymmetrical nasal tip, cartilage protrusions, arched nose, excessively upturned nose, saddle nose deformities, asymmetry of the nostrils, bird beak deformations (caused by cartilage or soft tissue) and problems with breathing functions .
The most obvious functional problem encountered during revision rhinoplasty; nasal congestion.
Many different causes such as nasal septum or nasal wall can cause nasal congestion.
Many people have deviation in their nose even if they are not aware of it, that is, the cartilage and bone wall inside the nose is curved.
Rhinoplasty becomes mandatory in cases where nasal congestion is very serious.
In other words, plastic surgery is essential for functional recovery. Changes made to the nose during rhinoplasty surgery can increase the problem of deviation.
In some cases, nasal functions may become dysfunctional and deviation may occur as a result of the first surgery. The nose is a sensitive organ.
Aesthetic procedures on cartilage and bone are always more difficult than those applied to soft tissue and skin.
Small changes can cause functional and aesthetic changes.
Therefore, rhinoplasty has a very high revision rate compared to other types of aesthetic surgery.
Revision rhinoplasty requires a skillful combination of science and art.
"In order to achieve good results in revision rhinoplasty, surgical experience and mastery are indispensable".
