What is Stomach Balloon?

Gastric balloon, or intragastric balloon, is a medical product that has assumed an auxiliary role in bariatric (obesity) surgery since 1985 and has been developed and used widely over time. Balloons placed empty in the stomach with the help of endoscopy are then filled with air or liquid depending on the type.

The full volume of the balloons is between 400-700ml. Some types of balloons that usually remain in the stomach for 6 months can last up to 12 months. When the time of the balloons expires, they are emptied with the appropriate technique and removed from the stomach by the endoscopic method.
In addition to the balloons placed by the endoscopic method, there are also capsule shaped balloons taken orally. When the period of use expires, these are either removed from the stomach by endoscopic method or spontaneously extinguished from the body by natural means. Among the gastric balloons produced by many different companies, three brands (Orbera, Obalon and ReShape Duo) have FDA approval.

Everything You Need to Know About Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon application is a form of treatment that has been used as a method to help weight loss before bariatric surgery in the fight against obesity for many years. It is not a surgical procedure, so it should not be confused with stomach surgery.

It is applied by general surgery, metabolic surgery and gastroenterology surgeons. The balloon, which is placed in the stomach by the endoscopic method, is responsible for giving the patient a feeling of satiety and thus supports the patient's weight loss process. General anesthesia or sedation is applied while the gastric balloon is placed, and the procedure time is less than 30 minutes.
Weight loss of 10-25 kg is expected in patients during the time that balloons, which are resistant to gastric acid, are between 6-12 months in the stomach. More weight loss is possible in patients who are fed regularly and strictly follow the doctor's recommendations.
All gastric balloons are imported from abroad. Therefore, their prices vary depending on exchange rates. The factors determining the price in gastric balloon application can be listed as the brand of the product, the doctor's fee, the province, district and district where the clinic or hospital is located.

The price of gastric balloon application across the country varies from 6,000 TL to 18,000 TL, with an average price of 10,000 TL.
  • Between the ages of 18-65, weight problem (Body Mass Index> 30) and surgical intervention is not required for treatment (under 18 years of age, medical necessity and family approval are required.)

  • In order to ensure that morbidly obese (Body Mass Index> 40) and super obese (Body Mass Index> 50) patients lose a certain amount of weight before the operation to reduce the risk of surgery

  • Rarely, people with BMI> 28 to support the weight loss process

  • Pregnant women
  • People who have had previous stomach or open abdominal surgery
  • For those with a hernia
  • Alcohol addicts
  • Mentally unstable patients

  • The patient stops feeding 12 hours before the procedure and liquid intake 6 hours before the procedure.
  • Sedation or general anesthesia is applied.
  • Before the procedure, the entire digestive system is examined by endoscopic method and if there is no problem to attach a gastric balloon, the next step is passed.
  • The deflated balloon, which is lowered into the stomach with the help of an endoscope, is placed in the most appropriate place.
  • The balloon is then filled with saline fluid with either air or methylene blue added.
  • After the tightness of the balloon is tested, the endoscope is removed and the process is completed.
  • Patients are kept under observation for 3-4 hours after the procedure and then discharged.

Gastric balloon application alone does not have the feature of attenuation. After the gastric balloon is attached, the recommendations of the doctor and dietician should be followed, and a regular and applicable diet program should be created by changing the diet. The gastric balloon is a temporary application and the permanence of the results depends entirely on the individual performance of the patient.

  • Liquid diet should be applied for the first three days. With dietician approval, thinned fruit and vegetable purees can be eaten.
  • Apart from 3 main meals and 3 snacks a day, meals should not be eaten.
  • Drinking water should be avoided during meals.
  • The consumption of acidic foods and beverages is not recommended.
  • Body posture should be upright while eating.
  • At least 1.5-2 liters of liquid should be taken a day.
  • Fatty, caffeinated, excessively spicy foods and drinks should be limited.
  • The consumption of weight-bearing foods such as flour, sugar, starch, cream should be discontinued or limited.
  • Eating late should be avoided.
  • Food intake should be stopped at least two hours before bedtime.
  • In cases of nausea and vomiting, the doctor should be consulted without delay and the diet should be rearranged.

Since the stomach will reject the foreign body in the first place, it will give various reactions for 7-14 days after the gastric balloon is attached. These are side effects of different severity in each patient. The most common are:

  • Severe nausea and vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Ulcer
  • Severe stomach cramps
  • Feeling of indigestion

In the gastric balloon application, which generally has a low risk of complications, some situations that require surgical intervention may occur rarely:

  • Perforation of the esophagus or stomach
  • The balloon that deflates unnoticed in the stomach is obstructing the intestines
  • Risky wounds on the stomach wall caused by the balloons that have expired

Gastric balloons are produced to resist stomach acid and are subjected to various sealing tests. Therefore, rather than exploding, they may very rarely be at risk of leakage. Methylene blue, which turns the color of the urine blue, is added to immediately recognize the leakage into the fluid-filled gastric balloons. When this situation is noticed, it should be discussed with the doctor immediately.
It is not a permanent procedure such as gastric balloon, sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. It stays in the stomach for 6-12 months depending on the type of balloon and then it is removed. The permanence of the results of the procedure depends on the person's diet and lifestyle. People who do not continue their diet and exercise program after the gastric balloon is removed, they regain their weight and return to the pre-procedure. However, one of the advantages of gastric balloon application is that it can be reapplied when necessary.
Gastric balloon application is an issue that should be investigated in detail before it is applied. The patient, who is decided by a specialist in the field to be suitable for having a gastric balloon, should carefully evaluate the procedure. There are many forums on the internet where real patient experiences are shared. Post-application comments of those who have a gastric balloon are a valuable resource. Reading the lived stories while researching the subject enables the patient to have a clearer idea about the procedure.
