What is Fractional Laser?

Fractional lasers are treatment tools that have been developed to renew skin tissue and have a wide range of use. After a detailed skin examination by dermatologists or plastic surgeons, sessions are applied to the problematic skin area in an appropriate number and time.

Depending on the type of device used, laser beams affecting the epidermis or dermis layer of the skin cause controlled damage to the skin tissue in the area to be treated. After this process, the skin begins to renew rapidly and at the end of the healing process, the planned improvement is achieved in the skin. While a long healing process is required after the aggressive laser applications used in previous years, the healing process is shorter and easier since the skin damage is minimal after fractional laser.

Everything You Need To Know About Fractional Laser

In the treatments performed by fractional lasers, which have a very wide application area, factors such as session area, session duration, the doctor applying the treatment, the province, district and district where the clinic is located determine the session fee. Although the net session fees are revealed after a detailed doctor's examination, the average cost of the fractional laser session applied for rejuvenation of the whole face is 2000 TL.
The skin has three main layers; epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis area, the uppermost layer, produces the pigments responsible for the color of the skin. The second layer of dermis consists of collagen and elastin fibers that provide elasticity and strength to the skin.

The fractional laser type is selected according to the layer in which the problem will be solved. Lasers with different wavelengths depending on the layer to be applied and the size of the treatment provide micro-columns transitions only in the skin tissue in the area to be treated. After the laser application, collagen production starts rapidly in the damaged area. Since it affects the problem area, not the skin in general, both easy recovery and side effects are minimal.
There are three types of fractional lasers. These have different wavelengths and are applied to different layers of the skin. Since the second layer of the skin can penetrate the deepest dermis, the laser with the most comprehensive improvement feature is the carbon dioxide (CO2) fractional laser.

Fractional laser treatment can be applied to almost any part of the body. It can be combined with other aesthetic treatments. Commonly used areas are as follows:
  • Removal of facial lines
  • Removal of skin spots (age and sun spots, freckles, moles, etc.)
  • Removal of acne scars
  • Removal of surgical scars
  • Rejuvenation of the skin by removing wrinkles and sagging
  • Elimination of weight and height cracks
  • Editing skin color
No special preparation is required for fractional laser application. After the doctor's examination, after the application area is selected:
  • The skin is cleaned with sterile solutions.
  • A special anesthetic gel is applied to the application area to prevent the sensation of pain that may occur during the procedure. It takes 45-60 minutes to take effect.
  • Special glasses are worn to protect the eyes from the light.
  • The duration of laser application varies depending on the area to be treated.
  • A special cooling system is used to reduce the burning sensation during application.
Fractional laser treatment lasts between 1-5 sessions, depending on the size of the application area, the size of the damage and the skin layer applied. Session intervals are 4-5 weeks and sessions last approximately 60 minutes, including the effect of local anesthesia.
Since fractional lasers give heat to the area during the application, they can create different levels of pain for each patient. Among those who undergo fractional laser, there is no pain sensation in patients with a high pain threshold, while patients with a low pain threshold create a tolerable, very mild pain sensation. The discomfort during the session is reduced with anesthetic gels and cooling devices.
Thanks to new generation devices, laser beams only affect the skin tissue in the problematic area and thus shorten the healing process. Patients can usually return to their normal lives after a short period of 48 hours. Changes in the skin after laser application are as follows:
  • Immediately after the procedure, a slight burning sensation begins in the application area.
  • In the first 2-3 days, swelling may be seen on the treated area, it is temporary.
  • The skin becomes pink after application.
  • After about the 3rd day, the pinkness on the skin gets darker and becomes bronze.
  • 4-14. In the areas that darken after the day, scaling occurs and then the scales fall off.
  • In about 1 month, the skin will be prepared for a new session, if necessary.
  • It may take 6-12 months for the collagen production to be completed and the skin to take its final form.
  • The application area should be protected from the sun during and after recovery with appropriate sunscreens and clothing.
  • After the application, special lotions and creams given by the doctor should be used regularly.
  • If necessary, a cold compress can be applied to the treatment area with the doctor's recommendation.
  • Direct ice contact to the application area should be avoided to prevent ice burns.

  • Edema lasting 24-48 hours
  • Temporary burning sensation on the skin
  • Crusting
  • Extreme acne
  • Persistent spotting (Rarely)

If the application areas are well protected from the sun, the results of the process are expected to be permanent, but it is not possible to permanently eliminate the changes that will occur in the same area due to aging.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding people
  • Cancer patients
  • Those who use drugs with side effects that cause photosensitivity
  • Those with open wounds on their skin
